Go ride a bike!

It’s been about a week and a half since the surgery to remove the metal in my arm from my cycling accident back in March. I’m not supposed to be on the bike yet, according to my surgeon, till we talk about it when I see him tomorrow. However…this weather is just too tempting (plus I didn’t want to have to park downtown for a friend’s wedding on Saturday at Mohawk).
In the months following the accident, I’ve experienced a very sharp muscle and/or nerve pain while I’m riding my bike. The physical therapists have tried to pinpoint it’s cause and I’ve been working hard on strengthening the muscle, but the pain has not subsided. I love riding so much, that I’ve just accepted this will be a part of the experience and continued on - although long distances have been very difficult and I’m sore for about a few days after every ride.
So, early in the evening on Saturday, I gingerly got back on my bike, not quite knowing what to expect. And to my complete surprise, not only was I able to ride - but my arm does not hurt anymore - at all. All along, it was the plate causing the aggrevation! I cannot even adequately express how happy this made me. I didn’t realize how much pain I was in when riding till it was gone!
I was so overjoyed about this, that I ended up just riding around by myself quite a bit on Saturday and had a fantastic time people watching and having random conversations. Riding down a darker east side street to meet some friends, I had the biggest smile on my face, just enjoying the brisk night and listening to my music. It feels like the accident never even happened - although my physical therapist mother explained to me with great concern this evening that I need understand that this is not the case.
Even so, this is epic for me.
I simply cannot wait to start riding like I used to - painfree and carefree.
FINALLY! Kudos to this Austin cyclist for advocacy!
Google is now adding bike routes to google maps!
Oh weekend, I’ve got a crush on you.
The sun finally came out this weekend so we could play!
The Regulator “Hares and Hounds” ride was spectacularly fun on Saturday and the steady ride today, including brunch at Sagra with friends was just as lovely.
My legs hurt and I’m tired, but in the most delightful way.
They Want to Ride Their Bicycles

“There are many artworks that have made great use of the humble bicycle, from Marcel Duchamp’s classic Bicycle Wheel to Simon Starling’s ingenious transformation of an Eames chair into a Marin “Sausalito” bicycle in Work, Made-Ready (2007). It’s almost enough to make you forget that an artist might actually ride a bike too, but - thanks to New York gallery The Swiss Institute - we now have a monthly reminder for the new year of 2010, in the form of Artists on Their Bikes: New York. For this limited edition calendar, photographer Lukas Wassmann photographed 12 artists including Ryan McGinley and David Byrne cycling around Manhattan, whether they’re getting from A to B or enjoying the ride as urban flaneurs. The calendar is available now from the Swiss Institute.”
