Anonymous asked: Is there any Banksy street art in sydney australia?
Hey Anonymous!
So, I am by no means an expert on Banksy or Australia, but I don’t believe there are any actual pieces on the street in Sydney - he did an exhibit there at harbour island this past fall (it seems you may have just missed it).
With that said, I’ve been a huge fan for years of the subversive nature of his graffitti and the larger ‘rage against the machine’ commentary that alot of his politically-charged images represent. However, I really don’t know how I feel about him hosting “exhibitions” or selling his public art for millions of dollars or people being able to know where he’s currently promoting this or that. It certainly erodes the mystique of who he really is.
It seems that he’s of the mind, “If these idiots want to buy this stuff, then fine.” But in alot of people’s minds, it’s a huge sell out to graffitti culture and the messages that made him famous in shaded alleyways and public streets in the UK.
If you’re into his bombings though - you should check out Banksy Street Art. They are pretty up-to-date on all his most recent work. And if you’re into Graffitti Culture in general - I highly recommend watching the documentary, “Bomb It”. It’s super rad.
Happy Hunting!
